I thought i would add some information about problems in Spain for dogs. You do need to make sure that all dogs are protected from heartworm if you do not you really should not have a dog.

Why do mosquitoes bite? Only female mosquitoes bite. Female mosquitoes require a blood meal to acquire the protein needed to produce eggs. Females lay multiple batches of eggs during their lifespan, and a new blood meal is needed to produce each batch. Different mosquito species prefer different host species; some mosquitoes will seek blood meals from birds, others from mammals - and some are generalists. The female inserts her needle-like proboscis - a slender, tubular, feeding and sucking organ - under the victim’s skin, drawing blood into her abdomen. She will feed until her abdomen is full, unless discovered and brushed away.

Why do mosquitoes seem to bite some people, but not others? This phenomenon is not completely understood. Mosquitoes are attracted by the carbon dioxide that we - and other animals - exhale. They may also be attracted by various odors - perfume, perspiration, lactic acid, detergents - that combine in unique ways to make one victim more attractive than another as a meal. Because dark colors absorb heat and lighter colors tend to reflect heat, mosquitoes also tend to be more attracted to victims dressed in darker clothes. Also, some people react more violently to the bites than others and only appear to be bitten more often.

Why do mosquitoes bites itch and swell? The itching, swelling, and burning from a mosquito bite are actually caused by the body’s autoimmune response to the saliva injected by the mosquito when she feeds. This saliva contains anti-coagulating agents that prevent the victim’s blood from clotting as it is sucked into the mosquito’s abdomen. A bite may take several days to heal and stop itching; treat it with Calamine lotion or a topical anti-itch medication.

Where do mosqu Mosquitoes breed in wet, swampy areas, where they lay their eggs. The eggs hatch in the water, and the young mosquitoes spend their pupal stages in the water. Mosquitoes lay eggs in both fresh and polluted water, and seek still waters such as those found in small puddles, ditches, and ponds. Even a small amount of standing water - say, in the bottom of a flower pot - will provide sufficient habitat for mosquito eggs. These eggs usually hatch about 5 days after they are laid. A key factor in mosquito prevention is the elimination of standing water in an area.

What is the average lifespan of a mosquito? Like most insects, mosquitoes are a prime food source for birds, amphibians, and spiders. Between predators and extreme weather events such as drought and harsh rains, most mosquitoes live for an average of about two weeks in their adult form. If they manage to escape predators, females from some mosquito species live to about two to three months of age. Those females who enter adult form late in the season may go into hibernation as cooler weather approaches, and can emerge the following spring to lay eggs. In many species, eggs laid before the onset of cold weather can also survive through a winter, even without water, re-hydrating in spring rains to go through larval, pupal, and adult stages.

How many types of mosquitoes are there? According to the American Mosquito Control Association, there are more than 2500 species of mosquitoes world-wide.

Sand Flies

These include any insect of the family Phlebotomidae of the order Diptera. The aquatic larvae live in the inter-tidal zone of coastal beaches, in mud, or in wet organic debris. The adults are often called biting midges and are only 2 to 3 mm in length making them difficult to see.

Sand flies are found in almost any aquatic or semiaquatic habitat throughout the world. Many of the blood-sucking species are pests in beach or mountain habitats. They may also be vectors of disease-causing viruses, protozoa, and filarial worms. The bite is not painful but often causes an allergic response which becomes very itchy. Some people get a red weal 1-2 inches wide! Avoid scratching the weals; it makes them itch longer and can lead to infection.

<!–[if !vml]–><!–[endif]–>Sand flies are of considerable medical importance: around the Mediterranean and in southern Asia, Phlebotomus transmits the pappataci fever virus; and in parts of South America, Africa, and Asia it carries the protozoan parasites causing kala azar, Oriental sore, espundia, and bartonellosis.

The name sand fly is also used for certain species of the black fly and the biting midge. They are often referred to as No-See-Ums because you rarely see them.

<!–[if !vml]–><!–[endif]–> <!–[if !vml]–><!–[endif]–>Fleas

Adult fleas are about 2mm long, wingless, and have three pairs of legs. The hind pair of legs is modified for jumping. Fleas are reddish-brown in colour and vertically flat like a fish, and can move easily through the hair of a host. They feed on the blood of their hosts.Fleas breed wherever their host sleeps. Flea eggs are small and white. The larvae of the flea look like small white worms with dark heads. They live on the floor and feed on organic debris. They form pupae which can lie dormant until they sense a suitable host passing by and then they come out to feed. The human flea, (Pulex Irritans), is almost extinct in Europe but other types of animal flea are much more common and will bite humans especially when they cannot find their usual animal host or if they become very numerous. Their bite often leaves a small, red, irritated area.

Mosquitoes and Sand Flies carry disease. Heartworm.

Information about Jack Russell’s. All you need

Back to main Website<<<

Misty I have put some info about the kind of things you need to make sure a dog never has any problems with. Probally apart from the heat and snakes you need to make sure we are covered for all the other issues in Spain. The one that sticks out is Heart worm. I have put together some information about this but it is only a rough guide and you should as always check with your Vet.

It is no secret that Mosquitoes and Sand Flies carry disease. For humans, malaria is the principle threat, but to dogs, it’s heart worm. This deadly affliction can remain undetected for months, until infected animals are subject to a number of uncomfortable and potentially fatal conditions. Worm infections can precipitate other circulatory conditions, causing even more complications. Dog owners should be aware of what heartworm is, how it is transmitted, and what treatment and preventative measures are available to protect their dogs’ health. [edit]

What is Heartworm?

Heartworm, or dirofilaria immitis, is an actual worm that resides in a dog’s heart. The parasites can grow between six and twelve inches long, and an infected dog may host more than a hundred worms which can spread to the lungs and large vessels in the circulatory system. As the parasites mature, they block the blood flow and can lead to anemia (reduced hemoglobin) or heart failure.

Heartworm is carried by mosquitoes and fleas and sand Flies in tropical and semi-tropical climates such as the most of southern europe, but occurrences are not limited to those areas. As dog owners travel (taking southerly vacations in winter months, for example), they expose their pets to the disease, and northern mosquitoes can acquire the parasites as larvae from infected dogs. Cases of this parasite have now been reported throughout Spain, and the parasite can affect all Dog Breeds. Once a dog is bitten by an infected mosquito, the worms may not reproduce for up to nine months, leaving no visible symptoms of infection. Because of this, dog owners who travel frequently should take all preventative measures to protect their pets even if there is no indication of a parasite’s presence. Furthermore, this problem can also affect cats, so owners should take precautions with all their pets. [edit]

Symptoms

Anemia, characterized by pale gums, excessive sleep, weight loss, and lethargy Coughing as worms settle in the lungs Lack of energy or easy exhaustion because the heart is overworked Weight loss even without reduced appetite Weakened immune system leading to frequent minor illnesses Fainting spells due to reduced blood flow [edit]TreatmentAlthough it is a serious condition, this infection can be treated. Because diagnosis is not typically made until adult worms have become prevalent, treatment usually involves hospitalization. Injections can kill the worms living in the dog’s heart, but they must be administered with care because the powerful drugs can also damage the animal’s liver and kidneys. Blood tests can ascertain both the success of the treatment as well as potential damage to other organs. After adult worms are destroyed, additional injections are required to kill the heartworm larvae in the dog’s bloodstream to prevent re-infection. Supplementary treatment may also be necessary to help repair the parasite’s damage to the heart and lungs, and the animal may be susceptible to pulmonary infections for some time afterwards. [edit]

Preventing HeartwormThe best cure for heartworm is its prevention, sparing the dog a prolonged ordeal. Both daily and monthly tablets are available that destroy larvae before it reaches maturation, therefore preventing the worms from lodging in the dog’s heart. These preventative measures must be given to dogs throughout warm seasons (spring, summer, and fall), or year-round for animals living in or regularly visiting warm climates. Before traveling to a location with a higher probability of worm infection, consult your veterinarian for appropriate precautions. Furthermore, avoid exceptionally swampy parks or areas of long grass that will harbor elevated mosquito populations. The preventative drugs can be exceedingly dangerous for animals already infected with heartworm, and dog owners should always have their pets tested before beginning a preventative program. [edit]

Summary

Spread through mosquito and flea bites and Sand Flies, heartworm is a parasitic infection that disrupts an animal’s circulatory system, eventually leading to life-threatening complications. Treatment can be extensive, but prevention is a simple matter of regular tablets. Though this disease can affect any dog breed anywhere in the country, it is more prevalent in warmer climates where pest populations are higher. By becoming familiar with the disease, its symptoms, and possible treatments, dog owners can take adequate measures to protect their pets and preserve their healthy, active lifestyles.

what do we have to protect us in Spain then?

Misty I will list the treatment that we have and let you know what works in Spain.

Front line from the UK. Which we had for fleas in the uk but it also covers other bugs here in Spain. You have three months with Front Line and you can not mix it with other treatments you will need to allow for this. So we have to wait for the one we need out here. this will cover many other pests including the heart worm worry. Should be kept away from swamps or the beach until the new treatment can be applied.

The new one that you can buy in the UK is.

Anal glands itching and Yogi DIY method how to save a vet bill.

Information about Jack Russell’s. All you need

Back to main Website<<<

I am going to talk about a dog’s anal glands. This is a subject very close to my heart as I have always had problems with this. The cost of going to the vet every time they need emptying can work out very expensive. Mine seem to fill up every 5 weeks so I have found out how to DIY those glands. Just need to get one of the humans to follow these steps and I am clear. Mind you it is not the most pleasant job and the smell can be very bad. I will have it done tonight and let you know how it went in the blog.

Dog Anal Glands

From LoveToKnow Dogs

[edit]

What Are Dog Anal Glands?

Dog anal glands are two small glands located on either side of your dog’s rectal opening. Each gland holds a small amount of a noxious smelling liquid brown substance that your pet uses as something of a doggie calling card. [edit]

How Dog Anal Glands Are Used

Whenever your dog urinates or defecates, the anal glands receive a small amount of pressure, and a tiny bit of the fluid is released, along with your dog’s custom blended scent. Your dog can also express a little of his personal essence when he meets a fellow canine. Have you ever noticed that when two dogs meet, they often raise their tails on high alert? This action applies the pressure to the dog anal glands, and this leads to the traditional butt sniffing we humans cannot seem to fathom. However, to our dogs this behavior is as normal as shaking hands when you meet someone new. By sniffing, the dogs learn to identify each other by their scents. Equate it with exchanging business cards, and you have the idea. If you’re alarmed at this point about all this expressing going on, don’t be. Remember that a dog’s sense of smell is light years beyond our own, so the amount of the actual expressions are minute, and you’ll likely never smell anything yourself unless your dog develops an anal gland infection. [edit]

Gland Problems and Diet

Many dogs never seem to have a problem with their anal glands, but the opportunity for infection to take hold is always there. When the anal glands are not sufficiently expressed, bacteria is given the chance to build up, and this can lead to numerous problems. Your dog can develop an infection, which if left untreated can progress into an abscess. The abscess can then rupture through the skin, leading to further complications. It’s believed that dog anal gland problems can be linked to the quality of pet food a dog receives. Inexpensive brands of dog food use a lot of cereal fillers, which tend to make soft stools. The soft stool isn’t able to press firmly enough against the dog’s anal glands to provide the necessary pressure to express them, and there the trouble begins. Higher quality dog foods that produce a firmer, more compact stool actually aid the expressing of dog anal glands and, therefore, may be a better food choice for your pet. [edit]

Signs of Gland Problems

If your dog’s anal glands fail to properly express, they may actually become impacted, making your dog very uncomfortable. Watch for these signs: Your dog begins scooting or dragging his rear across the floor. Your dog keeps licking or chewing near his rectum. Your dog’s stools have become soft and mushy. If you are noticing one or more of these signs, it may be a good idea to take your dog in for a check up with his vet. The dog anal glands may actually need to be manually expressed, a job best left to the professionals. Some professional dog groomers will also perform this procedure for you at your request. DIY Anal Glands for Dogs.[edit]Many breeders and owners feel capable of expressing their dog’s anal glands themselves. However, one should be prepared for the anal gland secretions to appear and smell quite disgusting. If you feel this is a task you are willing to perform, here are some basic directions. Please be advised, that you should only perform this procedure on your own dogs and never someone else’s. Prepare a warm moist washcloth. Locate your dog’s anal glands by raising his tail and using your other hand to feel for two lumps at approximately five and seven o’clock on either side of his anal opening. Holding the cloth over his anal opening to prevent an unpleasant squirt, begin applying firm but gentle pressure to the sacs. This should cause some of the fluid to be expelled through the rectal opening, thereby emptying the glands. Wipe your dog’s behind clean, and the job should be finished. If you notice blood or pus in your dog’s anal gland secretions, it is likely a sign of infection, and you should contact your vet for an appointment and treatment. [edit]

Ants in Spain and beetles taste good, Yogi has a new ball.

Misty We have been out three times a day for walks since we have been here in Spain. The weather is always nice and in all the time we have been here so far which is 1 day over four weeks we have only seen about two hours of rain. Here waiting for rain is like waiting for the sun to shine in the UK. We walk down by the salt lake sometimes and most of the time we just go down to the field down the road, I say field but it is not green it is dusty and sandy through the heat. Yogi loves it there he goes down there fast but walks back very slow. Just loves to play ball. Today he has a new ball it is one of the Tesco rugby balls that the humans bought in the UK before we left.

He is completely worn out. There is supposed to be 23 snakes here but I keep looking for them but have only found beetles. They are fun though.

Did you see those Ants marching down the path, there were hundreds and they were all different sizes. They were carrying bits and pieces along the path I reckon if you stood to long in one place they would carry you off Misty.

Misty Here is some interesting information on Ants in Spain. http://www.xent.com/pipermail/fork/2002-April/010772.html

A super colony of ants was found in Spain. The length of the ant hill is 3.6 miles. Billions of ants live in this colony in millions of little holes that are all connected with each other. This is the biggest corporate unit that has ever been registered by scientists. Research has shown that the ants of the colony resemble each other genetically. This allows the colony to develop a lot faster than usual, which would not happen due to natural selection. It is well known that the ants of Argentina sometimes live in huge groups, but this tremendous colony in Spain is one of a kind. European scientists said that they had also found a smaller colony that which was also very large in Catalonia. When the ants of those two super colonies were put together, they were fought each other to death, whereas the ants from different holes of one and the same colony never showed any aggression against each other.

You are so clever Misty how do you know so much about everything?

Misty Of cause I am clever. That is why I am in charge.

It was fun with the new ball but the heat can get to me a bit. I have to stand in the shade on the way back to cool down a bit. How are you feeling after you ran into the salt lake Misty? You know when you went running towards the lake and did not stop. It did look funny you just went straight of the edge into the salty water and got soaked.

Misty I don’t want to talk about it I had a bad tummy and was up all night. And I had to have a shower.

You did not smell too good. Did you find out why we were on our own last night? They went out at 9pm and we were left for hours they did not come back until early this morning it was to late for the humans to be out.

Misty It is so not fair. We can not go out when we want to. We have some more pictures here.

Misty I have made a list of things that you will need to drive a car in Spain. check before you go though as laws change very quickly in Spain.

Be especially careful when setting off from service stations or restaurants on the left side of the road.

Take care when overtaking - allow more space between you and the car in front so you can see further down the road ahead.

Spain has strict drink driving laws, only allowing 0.5 milligrams of alcohol per millilitre of blood - stricter than the UK where the limit is 0.8. New drivers are effectively forbidden to drink and drive, with a very low 0.1 mg/l limit.

Seat belts front and rear are obligatory everywhere.

Speed limits, shown below, are implemented rigorously. Radar traps are frequent.

Remember - Speeding and other traffic offences are subject to on-the-spot fines.

In all countries a full UK driving licence is required. As in the UK, seat belts should be worn front and rear. Below are motoring regulations relating to Spain.

Beware in Spain.

The law operating in Spain regarding the use of indicators on motorways is being strictly enforced. You risk being fined for not indicating before overtaking and again before pulling back to the nearside lane after overtaking. Also, ensure you do not cross the solid white line as you enter the motorway from a slip road, but wait until the line is broken.

Speed limits

Motorway

Open Road

Town

Alcohol mg/ml

Spain

120 km/h

90-100 km/h

50 km/h

0.5

Bail Bond: a guarantee to be lodged with the police in the event of an accident or major traffic violation - no longer a legal requirement for Spain and most insurance companies have stopped issuing them.

Children in cars: Children under 12 cannot travel in the front unless using a suitably adapted restraint system. In the rear, passengers under 135cm tall must use specially adapted safety devices and restraints.

Documentation: always carry your driving licence, vehicle registration document (V5), and certificate of motor insurance. If your licence does not incorporate a photograph ensure you carry your passport to validate the licence. If the vehicle is not registered in your name, carry a letter from the registered owner giving you permission to drive.

Drinking and driving: Don’t do it. Over 0.05 per cent and you could face anything from a severe fine, withdrawal of your licence, up to imprisonment.

Fines: On the spot fines are issued. Ensure an official receipt is issued by the officer collecting the fine.

First-aid kit is advised, but not compulsory.

Fuel: All grades of unleaded petrol (benzin), diesel (gasoleo ‘A’) and LPG are available as well as lead substitute additive. Leaded no longer exists. It is allowed to carry petrol in a can. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, although they probably won’t work at automatic pumps, which are often the only pumps open out-of-hours and at lunch-time (from noon to 3pm) away from the Autoroutes. It’s a good idea to let your card issuer know you will be travelling abroad. This ensures they don’t suspend your card if they spot it being used in unfamiliar places, which they sometimes do as an anti-fraud measure.

GB sticker: UK registered vehicles displaying Euro-plates (circle of 12 stars above the national identifier on blue background) no longer need a GB sticker when driving in European Union countries.

Glasses (Spectacles): wearers must carry a spare pair in the car at all times.

Headlamp converters are compulsory.

Lights: dipped headlights should be used in poor daytime visibility. Motorcycles must use dipped headlights during the day at all times.

Minimum age for driving, provided you hold a full UK licence, is 18 for a car and for a motorcycle over 75cc. If you’ve got an old-style all-green licence you might find the police will not understand them, so either get them up-dated or take an International Driving Permit as well.

Motorcycle drivers and passengers must wear crash helmets.

Motor insurance: third-party insurance is compulsory. A green card is not required but your insurer should be advised of your trip.

Replacement bulb set is compulsory.

Seat belts are compulsory for front and rear seat occupants, if fitted.

Snow chains are recommended to be carried in the Spanish Pyrenees and all mountainous regions of Spain during winter, and if you do not carry and fit them when conditions demand the police can prevent you continuing your journey. Click for general.

Visibility Vests are now compulsory in Spain. They are also compulsory in Austria, Belgium, Italy, and Norway and (and likely to become compulsory throughout the EU). The rules vary from country to country concerning number of vests required and whether they should be carried in the car or boot. Common sense suggests that there should be a vest for every occupant, and that the vests should be carried in the car. Do this and you will not have a problem.

Warning triangle is compulsory. One only is required for non-Spanish registered vehicles. Two required for Spanish vehicles, but to avoid difficulties with the police we recommend two triangles should be carried.

Some pointers on buying a car in Spain

April 28th, 2008

Information about Jack Russell’s. All you need

Back to main Website<<<

I have put together some information on how to go about buying a car in Spain. Be careful because in Spain a car can have a debt attached which you would be resonsible after purchase not the old owner.

If you intend to buy a used car in Spain from either an owner or a garage it may help if you check the following:

That the vehicle has a current ITV or test certificate if one is required there is no evidence of involvement in a major accident or rebuild Chassis and engine numbers tally with those on registration docs, name on the registration documents is that of the seller. (Passport) Service coupons stamped by accredited dealer that you receive a transfer of ownership document from the seller what guarantees are available and in writing

It is quite common for used vehicles to be given good warranties by garages and these will depend largely upon the age and type of vehicle. 12 months is not unusual and in expatriate areas probably more common than in other areas.

There are advantages and disadvantages with living in areas where there may be significant number of expatriates. One of the advantages is that there is usually an excellent choice of most things including cars and car parts. For many expatriate retirees, their car becomes their hobby, as well as their method of transport.

As in the UK and other countries, Spain is no different in that it has its share of journals advertising used cars.

In many of the property free sheets you will find advertisements for garages selling new and used cars as well as advertisements placed by owners. Prices for vehicles seem to depend upon which area of Spain you happen to be in.

You may drive an EU plated car in Spain for up to 6 months in any one calendar year so if you arrived here in July, you could drive it until July the next, making it 12 consecutive months, however if you get stopped it is up to you, not the police to prove there and then you are not contravening the law. Beware though, the policia local sometimes have a blitz and wait outside such places as schools and note down details to use in 6 months time! They are then ready to pull you over and may serve a denuncia (Report/fine) and or fine. If you work here legally you have 30 days to re-register your foreign-plated car with Spanish plates. Keeping your non-registered car in Spain brings it’s own set of problems in any case as they need by law a British MOT to be legal, which needs to be carried out in the UK, then there is the problem of insurance, which will need to checked that it is valid here in Spain for an unlimited time, even if you do re-insure you still need to double check.

Please Note that if you are contemplating bringing over a commercial vehicle there are some Registration Difficulties- All commercial and leisure vehicles with RHDrive have a problem that does not exist on the ordinary car- The drivers vision is restricted especially when pulling away to join the traffic flow.

You need to ask yourself in your own set of circumstances whether it is worth buying a left hand drive vehicle in the UK where it may be cheaper, and drive it over or buy one here, if you have a right hand drive vehicle then consider who would want to buy it if, and when you want to sell it as well as the other problems previously mentioned?

When you buy your car it will be necessary for it to be transferred into your name. If you buy from a car dealer he will no doubt arrange the transfer and necessary documentation for you in consideration of a modest fee. If you purchase a vehicle privately, whilst you can sort the paperwork yourself, good advice would be to seek the services of a Gestor who specializes in this type of work. Again, the fee is likely to be quite modest but the saving in time and frustration will more than justify it.

If you want to take on the Spanish motor vehicles department yourself this is the procedure:

  1. An application form that you can obtain at the provincial traffic department.
  2. The Circulation Permit of the car, with the transfer of owners shown on the back, including the seller’s signature.
  3. A receipt showing that the municipal vehicle tax has been paid and a photocopy or computer scans of it.
  4. A receipt showing that the 4 per cent vehicle transfer tax due on the sale has been paid.
  5. The current ITV report and a photocopy or computer scan.
  6. Residence permit and photocopy.
  7. 35 Euros being the fee payable.
  8. Take all your documentation to the traffic department and ensure that you include a large self, addressed, stamped envelope so they are able to return the completed documents to you.

Whilst the above does not appear too complicated, the fact of the matter is likely to be different. The Spanish can make a drama out of the most insignificant happenings and together with any language difficulties there may be, you could end up regretting the day you decided to cope with your own paperwork.

For 2,000 - 3,000 euros it is quite possible to pick up a clean car in good condition. If you spend a day wandering around the various garages you are almost certain to come up with a quite acceptable vehicle that will be quite adequate for your purposes in Spain. You may be rather surprised at just how well some Spanish garages renovate and refurbish second hand cars.

One final thing on this subject - if you are selling your own car in Spain, ensure that the transfer is completed into the new owner’s name. As with the UK, failure to do so could have you being chased for parking tickets and other offences you did not commit. It is your responsibility to make sure the transfer tax is paid even though the buyer has to pay it!

Torrevieja. How the sun shines. History lesson about the Salt Lakes and getting a sun tan.

I needed that sleep Look Misty! That’s something you don’t see often the Sun is shining and blue skies everywhere and it feels nice and warm.

I have got up late and my legs are aching like mad, the back of my legs feel real sore all that driving and worry about the humans taking the wrong road or ending up in China has worn me down, I will have to take it easy today and I will unpack a bit later on today, can not be bothered at the moment. It is nice to be warm and see the Sun for a change. Flipping heck, it is hot it is about 35c and it is only noon. Have we got any sun block to put on? Really we should have some for dogs my belly is burning.

There is no such thing as dog sun block. At least I think there is not. It is so nice just laying here getting a nice tan. It looks like we are going for a walk Misty.

We are going down to the path around the salt lake, Fantastic view and this is where Torrevieja make there salt from. There is a story behind this I do not know whether it is true but it sounds good. Once upon a time long ago there was a King, This king was very fond of fishing but sadly he had no stomach for the sea, It was to rocky for him in his boat and he always was sea sick, He asked his court to find a solution for him and they came up with a plan. They created to big lakes with a small entrance to allow the sea to come in, as these were nice and calm waters protected from the seas strong waves this would be ideal to launch a boat on and there fore the king could fish without being rocked about. The king was pleased and went fishing and was not sea sick. But after a few months the fish began to die without reason. The King asked the court to find out why he was not pleased at all because although he could now go fishing without being ill, there were now no fish to catch. The courts looked into it and found that the salt content in the water was now so much that the fish would die. But they also noted that they could dry the salt out and could sell this in large amounts making the King very rich. So the king gave up fishing and became one of the wealthiest Kings of all Spain’s history. That’s a good story did you like it Yogi.

You made that up, Did you? It was good though. So Torrevieja produce salt is that all those mountains of white stuff?

Yes that is right. We have some pictures here of me and Yogi in the sun and more interesting than that we have a picture of the weather in the UK. West Sussex. This is where we were only two weeks ago. It has Snowed and it is all over our caravan I am sooo Glad we are not there now.

The Weather here in Torrevieja Los Balcones. 06 04 2008

And the weather in West Sussex Rustington UK 06 04 2008

I am so glad we are not there now. It would of frozen my dinkle of walking on the stuff I only have short legs. Ta Ta for now I have to get back to my tan.

Toll

Are we nearly there Misty? I have had enough of this cage I want to play with my ball.

We are just stopping for another break we don’t need anymore fuel so it is just a stretch your legs and have a drink of water type stop. The humans have let us have a walk and put us back in here and gone in the café that is so not fair we always get left out.

Did you see that dog I scared him off? One of them is coming back where’s the other one?

Here he comes with some bear bottles. What are all these humans they are all around the car looking at us?

They are Spanish plod better keep quite they may arrest us if we make a noise there are loads of them at least 10.

We are off again now should only be about another three hours until we are there. It is very dark now but nice and warm. I think we have another four toll gates to go through the last one coming of the AP7 at San Miguel and then it is only 10 minutes up the road from there to Los Balcones. They were very scary those police weren’t they Yogi?

I was not scared at all. I had not barked because I was still tired. Looks like we are at the last toll now Misty. here is a picture of someone weird I think that this is the real driver, You can tell he has been driving a while.

We will have to add up the total for the tolls and show to our readers how much in total it was we could add it to that other section with directions could we?

I was going to do that anyway. We are here at long last. 1.05pm 30 03 2008 Saturday. What a journey I really enjoyed that it is something I have always wanted to do, where is our house there are many that look the same. Here it is fantastic. It is quite warm and there are many different noises and smells, its just too exiting. Quick there is someone coming down the path; we had better bark and make sure that everyone knows we are here. What did that bloke say, he sounded drunk?

I think he was but we scared him he said. “Shut up, Bloody Dogs.” That’s a nice welcome we are finally home.

I have been awake for over 12 hours now and this driving is making my legs ache. We have seen some fantastic views of France, even seen some snow as we are very high up in the mountains and our ears all poped.

Here are some of the veiw’s in France and some road signs, I told you the person taking the photos might be a bit weird .

Road signs along the way.

And hey we even have some pictures of the road. What imagination.

Yogi has slept most of the way so far he is so lazy. We have some pictures now although they are not that good you can still see most things. There are some fantastic bridges and the roads here are nice and level not bumpy.

We have a few pics of bridges, I think that someone has a bridge fetish because we have loads.

The car has been filled up a couple of times with diesel and seems to be purring along. We are about to stop at a garage and have a walk it is nice and sunny here and loads of people sitting around having a drink and eating some food.

. Misty you have not been driving it is just you can not stop being in charge, and for the record I am only napping, There is no point sitting up and stressing life is to short. It is nice and warm here I don’t like the cold. I can see quite a few dogs about as well, How far have we gone now are we near Spain? And can we do some sort of road map and advice for other folks driving to Spain from the Channel Tunnel with dogs? I think this would be useful. Maybe make a separate section in our blog just for this called “From West Sussex, or south of the UK to Torrevieja in less than 30 hours with no ball playing and only fuel refills” That’s a good caption.

. That’s a good idea Yogi we will add a section that will help fellow canine travellers’. We are now very close to the Spanish border so this will be quite interesting. We have to make another stop soon as we need to fuel up but I think we have plenty to get over into Spain as the fuel is cheaper there than France that is why we have been just filling up at petrol station along the way sometime for only half a tank. And also just to give us a walk and some water. I have not wanted anything to eat yet because it is all too exciting.

. Here come another toll gate get ready to bark Misty. Remember to look like you’re not looking and half asleep and wait till they are asking the attendants how much. Just at that point bark like mad. It gives the maximum affect then and they can not hear a thing.

Ok but you got to promise not to fart when you bark you have been doing it every time and it smells. You have farted again Yogi it stinks and I just got zapped with that air noise dog correction thing they have as well. I am so not happy.

We are in Spain at the bottom of that winding road was the Spanish border they did not check passports at all. We are now on the road to Barcelona now and it is about 4pm on 29 04 08. Not bad going we will arrive in Torrevieja around 1am 30 04 08. So not that far to go.

. I have to keep awake then keep an eye on the humans make sure they don’t get on the wrong road and end up back in France. There are about another 10 tolls to go through but I think I will keep quite when we go through them I don’t like the noise made by that air thing It seems you are deaf to it Yogi you are so busy barking and farting you don’t hear it at all.

Euro Star and into France and how barking at border controls is fun.

Wake up Yogi, Its so exiting we are going on holiday and this will be the last time we sleep in the caravan for a few weeks. We have to make sure we have packed our leads we would not want the humans to forget them.

I am still a bit tired I need more sleep and I need to have something to eat before we go.

That’s all you think about Yogi is food, sleep and balls, You really need to think “outside of the box” We have to make sure that all our paper work is in order before we go. We need Passports, two for the humans and two for us. Car insurance documents, Driving licenses, Car breakdown Insurance we have Green Flag, Travel Insurance, Receipt for the Euro Star ticket, it has a number on there we need to get our pass.

I am sure the humans have all the paper work they need if you notice Misty there is nothing left in the caravan or any where for that matter, everything is in the car so it would be impossible to leave anything anyway.

Looks like we are off. I am not sitting in that cage though they have not even put the water bowls in. I will moan non stop and be sitting on the front seat by the time we get to Paris.

Not enough room to swing a cat let all lone throw a ball. Talking of cats Twinkle is saying goodbye. Talking of balls where is mine? Bet they have forgotten it.

Don’t be so silly you just think of your balls all the time there are more important things in life. Like how are we supposed to go to the loo and how are we to eat? Well we are off now the route we are taking is towards the M23 at Cowfold, then M25 towards Dartford tunnel then on to the M26 then M20 all the way too Folkestone Eurotunnel. Should take about 2 hours the weather is bad raining and the wind is blowing. We will stop and put half a tank of derv in because that is enough to get over to France where the fuel is cheaper then we will fill the car up.

How do you know all this stuff Misty? It is like you are driving the car.

I am. Someone has to make sure every thing is done right.

Are we there yet? I need to have a pee. Is this the place for the train thing that goes under the Channel?

Yes it is and we are too early, we have to wait for another two hours. This is the booth we have to go through, what you do is put the info that we have from booking online into the terminal screen with the number and then it will print a pass code, ours is A because it is the first one of the date 29 03 2008 00:54 then we go into the waiting area and their we can have a walk or drink until the message comes up on the screens all over the parking area for us to cue to board the train.

Even I could do this it is easy.

It is designed for even fools like you to be able to do it. Now remember when we go by any booths or toll gates to bark like mad, we have to make sure no one comes near the car.

We are getting out to have a walk now it is very dark we are not out this late I am used to being asleep by now. I am so tired.

We have to go through the security gates now our Letter has been called up on the screens. This is fun they have UK security one end and French the other just before you get on the train. I thought they were supposed to check all the paper work but they have not even asked for it.

They do not seem to worry on the way out I thought they would have gone through all the boxes in the car but they have not even bothered. The train is big we have to go on the big one with all the big vans because our height is more than 1.7m we are 2.3 with the top box on the roof. I notice the Sat Nav Tom Tom has been plugged in. Looks like we are in Calais France now there is no border control here just straight onto the main road E15 towards Paris. Will take a while though the information I have says it will be about 22 hours and a total of 1230 miles from West Sussex to Torrevieja. I am tired now Going to try to keep awake I have to make sure they go the right way.

We have reached Paris around 5 am and daylight is here almost still not very bright though very windy and some rain. Paris is a complete nightmare to go through it is lucky we have a Sat Nav the downloaded internet Map does not show how complicated it is and if it was not for the Tom Tom I think we would be going around in circles. We are almost half way through France now and well on our journey. It is very green here and for the first time in days the sun is out and there are clear blue skies. I am having a sleep now I have been very tired all the way down here. We have stopped once and stretched our legs had a good bark at a French dog and had a wee.

Misty why don’t you have a sleep?

I have to keep awake to make sure they don’t get lost. I am the navigator. We should have some photos soon although they may be a load of crap because the one you takes good photos is driving so that means the other one and we have not seen any of hers yet mind you just found this one and we look like we are flying.

nice one.
